Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
Obtaining an AEWV a three step process:
- The New Zealand employer has to apply to become ‘accredited’ with the Immigration Department. This is supposed to take around two weeks.
- The New Zealand employer then submits a ‘job check’ which is essentially recent evidence they have advertised the role and could not find a suitably qualified New Zealander to fill it. This is currently taking 3-4 weeks (updated June 2024).
- Once the job check is complete, a digital token is issued and allows the the AEWV application to be filed electronically.
These three steps must be done sequentially.
How Long Can I Stay on an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) in New Zealand?
The AEWV allows you to stay in NZ for up to 5 years depending on salary and skill level of your job in NZ.
If you are working in a skill level 1 to 3 and earning at least median hourly wage ($29.66 per hour), you will be granted a five year AEWV.
If you are working in a skill level 4 or 5 occupation and earning the median hourly rate or higher, you will be granted a two year AEWV.
If you are earning less than median wage, it becomes more complicated and we encourage you to contact us for further information and advice.
This visa also allows you to support visa applications for your partner and dependent children, as long as you meet the income requirements.

Steps to obtaining an Accredited Employer Work Visa:
- The New Zealand employer has to apply to become ‘accredited’ with the Immigration Department. This will take roughly 5 working days.
- The New Zealand employer then submits a ‘job check’ which, in most cases, is the new labour market test and they must demonstrate they could not find a suitably qualified New Zealander to fill the role. These are taking 3-4 weeks to assess.
- Once the job check is complete, INZ allows to employer to issue a digital token to the applicant (or adviser) to draft and submit the Accredited Employer Work Visa application. This is where applicants present evidence of identity, health, character and how they meet the requirements of the job check and are suitably qualified to undertake the role. 10-15 working days.
