The EOI Australia Application Process
1. Creating an EOI Profile
To initiate the EOI process, applicants need to create a profile in SkillSelect. This begins with setting up an account, which involves providing essential details such as name, date of birth, passport country, and citizenship status.
After the account is established, an EOI ID and password are sent via email. These credentials are crucial for accessing the system to manage and update the profile as required. It’s important to save the EOI at each stage to ensure that all progress is retained.
2. Providing Personal and Professional Information
In this stage, comprehensive personal and professional information is incorporated into the EOI profile.
Personal Details:
- Full Name
- Date of Birth
- Passport Country
- Citizenship Status
Professional Information:
- Qualifications: Educational degrees and certifications.
- Occupation: Current role and relevant employment history.
- Work Experience: Detailed account of previous positions, including responsibilities and durations.
Additionally, results from English language tests and skills assessments need to be included. For any dependents, such as a partner or children aged 18 or older, their functional English proficiency must also be documented.
3. EOI Review and Ranking
After the EOI is submitted, it enters a pool where it is evaluated and ranked based on criteria like work experience, qualifications, and other relevant factors.
Applicants are ranked according to their points score, which influences their chances of receiving an invitation to apply for a visa. SkillSelect periodically issues invitations, and selected applicants have 60 days to submit their visa application.
If not chosen right away, the EOI stays in the system for up to two years, during which applicants can update their information to enhance their ranking.

State and Territory Nomination
State and territory nomination is a pivotal component of the SkillSelect Expression of Interest (EOI) system. Through state or territory nomination, applicants can gain additional points, enhancing their competitiveness for specific visas.
The Role of States and Territories in the EOI System
States and territories are integral to the EOI system, nominating candidates for particular visa subclasses such as the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491) visa. These nominations provide applicants with extra points, significantly improving their points test scores.
Each state or territory government establishes its own skilled occupation lists and nomination criteria. They evaluate EOIs to identify candidates who align with their economic and demographic needs. Importantly, these governments have access to all EOIs submitted for the visas they support, enabling them to make targeted selections.
Criteria for Being Nominated by a State or Territory
To secure a nomination from a state or territory, candidates must satisfy specific criteria set by the nominating body. This typically involves selecting an occupation from the region’s skilled occupation list and proving that they possess the necessary skills and qualifications.
Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to residing and working in the nominating state or territory. For the Subclass 190 visa, this might entail a mandatory period of residence.
Additionally, some regions may require evidence of job offers or employment opportunities within the state or territory to ensure that the candidate will contribute to the local economy.
In certain cases, nominations may also take into account the applicant’s connections to the region, such as previous work experience or family members living in the area. By successfully meeting these criteria, candidates increase their likelihood of receiving an invitation to apply for a visa.

Post Submission of an EOI in Australia
Once an Expression of Interest (EOI) is lodged in SkillSelect, it remains valid for two years. During this time, applicants may receive an invitation to apply for a visa and should ensure their EOI details are kept up-to-date.
What Happens After Submitting an EOI?
After an EOI is submitted, it stays active in the SkillSelect system for up to two years. During this period, the applicant may be invited to apply for a visa based on their points score and other eligibility criteria.
Invitations are issued according to the applicant’s ranking among other EOIs. If selected, the applicant will receive a notification via email and will have 60 days to submit a complete visa application. It is crucial to act promptly, as the invitation will expire after 60 days.
Updating EOI Details and Maintaining Relevance
Applicants are advised to regularly update their EOI to reflect any changes in their circumstances, such as new qualifications or improved English test scores. These updates can enhance the applicant’s ranking and increase their chances of being selected.
To update an EOI, applicants need to log into their SkillSelect account and modify the relevant sections. It is essential to keep all information accurate and current to avoid complications during the visa application process. Regular updates may include:
- New educational qualifications
- Additional work experience
- Changes in personal details
- Improved English language test scores
By maintaining an up-to-date EOI, applicants improve their visibility and increase their likelihood of receiving an invitation to apply for a visa.
