For skilled professionals eyeing New Zealand as their next home, multiple pathways are available to secure residency. There are three main skills-based pathways: the Skilled Migrant Resident pathway, the Green List pathway, and the Care Workforce and Transport Sector Agreement pathways. Each option aims to attract talent that aligns with the country’s labour market needs and strategic priorities.

The Skilled Migrant Category pathway

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) serves as a primary pathway for skilled professionals seeking residence in New Zealand. This pathway emphasises skilled employment and a points-based system to assess eligibility.

The Requirements of the New Skilled Migrant Category

Applicants must have a job or job offer in New Zealand that is considered skilled. The position should be:

  • Full-time, at least 30 hours a week.
  • Within an ANZSCO Level 1 to 3 occupation, paid at or above the median wage.
  • Alternatively, an ANZSCO Level 4 to 5 occupation, paid at or above 1.5 times the median wage.

Employment must be permanent, a fixed-term contract for 12 months or more, or a service contract for six months or more. Additionally, applicants need to meet health, character, and English language requirements.

The Points System of the SMC

The points system evaluates various criteria to determine eligibility. Points are awarded based on:

  • Skilled employment in New Zealand.
  • Relevant work experience.
  • Qualifications.

Points are also given for factors such as:

  • Age.
  • Partner’s qualifications.
  • Employment outside Auckland.

Applicants must reach a specific points threshold to qualify. This threshold varies depending on current immigration policy. An online tool provided by Immigration New Zealand can help estimate total points based on individual circumstances.

The 2 Green List Pathways

The Green List offers skilled professionals two distinct routes for gaining residence in New Zealand. These pathways cater to various roles in demand and have specific criteria involving qualifications and work experience.

The Straight to Residence Path – Straight to Residence Visa

The Straight to Residence Visa offers an immediate residence option for professionals whose roles are listed under Tier 1 of the Green List.

To qualify, the candidate must secure a job offer in a Tier 1 occupation from an Accredited Employer. Additionally, qualifications, registrations, or experience in the specified field are essential. This pathway is beneficial for those wanting a quick transition to permanent residence without an extended period of temporary residence.

The Work to Residence Path – Work to Residence Visa

The Work to Residence Visa is designed for candidates working in Tier 2 occupations on the Green List.

Applicants must work for two years in their qualified roles under an Accredited Employer in New Zealand. Significant criteria include meeting the qualification and experience requirements specific to the occupation. This visa caters to those who prefer gaining work experience in New Zealand before applying for permanent residence. Experience since 29 September 2021 can be counted toward the two-year requirement.

The Care Workforce and Transport Sector Agreements pathways

The Care Workforce and Transport Sector Agreements provide specific pathways to residence for professionals working in designated roles. These pathways require relevant employment and adherence to set durations in their respective fields.

Care Workforce Pathway

The Care Workforce pathway targets individuals working in certain care roles. Applicants need to have been employed in eligible roles for 24 months within a 30-month period, starting from 29 September 2021. This pathway is available to a defined list of nine specific care worker roles.

Eligibility requires meeting employment criteria and ensuring the role is on the approved list. Care workers may need to provide evidence of employment history and compliance with these requirements.

This pathway is beneficial for addressing workforce shortages and ensuring skilled care workers have a clear route to residence.

Transport Sector Pathway

The Transport Sector pathway applies to professionals in designated transport roles. Like the care workforce, applicants must work in their roles for a minimum of 24 months within a 30-month period. This sector focuses on critical transport roles that support New Zealand’s infrastructure and logistics.

To qualify, applicants must be engaged in specific roles outlined in sector agreements. These roles are essential for maintaining and improving the transport services in the country.

By offering this pathway, New Zealand aims to retain skilled professionals in the transport sector, ensuring continuity and reliability in crucial transport services.

All Pathways Above Require You To Have A Job (Or A Job Offer) In New Zealand

Job hunting in a new country can be quite challenging. As a newcomer to New Zealand, you will likely find it difficult to secure a job offer without first obtaining a visa. This catch-22 situation can be frustrating, as many employers are hesitant to consider candidates who do not already have the legal right to work in the country.

In fact, some job listings explicitly state: “Only applicants with the right to work in New Zealand may apply.” This requirement can significantly narrow your job prospects and add an extra layer of complexity to your relocation plans.
